Galvan Torque Anniversary Large Arbor Fly Reel
To celebrate the Torque’s 20-year anniversary, Galvan is going to produce a one time run of the T-5, T-6, and T-8 model reels and spools with “20th Anniversary” frame engraving and a gold anodized finish. The Galvan Reel Co. was originally started as a small-batch machining business in 1993 by Bonifacio and Carmen Galvan in the California foothills trout country. Their first reels were the Standard arbor series and the Open-Back mid-arbor series, which were super-smooth and super-reliable, with a strong west-coast following. In 2004, Galvan launched the large-arbor Torque reel, which introduced a stunning new look and the super-reliable and smooth Torque drag system that is still used in the current Torque and Rush series reels. The Torques awakened the fly-fishing world to Galvan’s unique combination of optimized strength, weight, aesthetic, and reliability. Twenty years later, Galvan is still a family business manufacturing and servicing high performance fly reels in the USA.
The Galvan Torque fly reel now comes in a multitude of colors and has a rounded spool and frame rims, to the contoured counter balance, to the uniquely designed cutouts on the spool, frame, and drag knob, to the innovative new drag system. The drag system for the Galvan Torque Fly Reel is composed of stainless steel and a state-of-the-art, heat- and wear-resistant thermoplastic unlike anything else on the reel market. The Torque fly reel is completely salt water safe, and will continue to perform flawlessly under the harshest conditions from the flats and the blue water to the mountain streams and the coastal rivers. The Galvan Torque comes in a wide color selection as well including Black, Burnt Orange, Clear, Green and Blue.
As the premier reel in the Galvan series, the Torque Fly Reel represents the culmination of a lifetime of fly-fishing and passion for reel design. Simply stated, it represents the very best of modern fly reel architecture. The Torque was created because Boni wanted to create a revolutionary reel with more sufficient drag system than was presently available on the market and it had to be sexy. Thus the Torque Fly Reel was born
The unique Torque fly reel, the 4th series in creation, was the first reel released with our Galvan Torque drag system, which is now employed in all of our reels. Its inception was in late 2002 with prototypes coming to life in 2003. After being tested, retested and modified it was finally released to the public in 2004. It immediately won the 2004 Editors choice in Fly Fish America and was ranked #3 in the recent 8-weight reel shootout, beating out all other reels in function and price (link). Its original style and unique porting has solidified Galvan’s reputation as a leading innovator in the industry.
The visually striking appearance of the Galvan Torque Fly Reel is a result of the unique cutouts on the frame, spool, drag knob and foot. This design is not only aesthetic but also structural as it significantly reduces the weight of the reel while maintaining strength and increasing rigidity .The rounded rims on both spool and frame enhance durability to better withstand impact during extreme angling conditions.
From first glance, the hand is drawn to the reel and from the first crank of the contoured counter balance spool, the quality becomes apparent: efficiency and simplicity driven by function. In this case, less is more and cost is no exception as the Torque retails at half the price of reels in its class.
The Torque is saltwater safe, and will perform flawlessly under the harshest conditions. From remote alpine lakes to the saltwater flats the highly ventilated spool and frame balance nicely with the lightest of todays fly rods yet still compliments a modern big game saltwater stick. Tough as nails and skillfully marries the technology of the future with the tradition of the past you need a Galvan Torque Fly Reel.

Torque, moment, or moment of force (see the terminology below) is the tendency of a force to rotate an object about an axis, fulcrum, or pivot. Just as a force is a push or a pull, a torque can be thought of as a twist to an object. Mathematically, torque is defined as the cross product of the lever-arm distance vector and the force vector, which tends to produce rotation.
